Wood Fence Maintenance 101

Fortunately, wood fence maintenance is a task that only comes around in a big way every few years or so. That doesn’t imply that you should neglect this important area, and since your fence was expensive, it only makes sense that you would want to help keep it looking great. You may live here for ten more years and want to sell, and then you will regret not having done maintenance on your fence. Discover how to take care of your fence in the best possible ways by following established procedures.

Temperature and Humidity

So you have finally decided to stain your fence, great, but learn what needs to be done and the best way, first. First, you want to avoid uneven application of the stain or even paint if you want to paint it. As for the color of your stain, be sure that it will not clash with the stain you have underneath, if you already have a stain there. Weather will include the temperature and humidity which is similar to painting your indoor rooms in your house, and be very sure that you read, understand, and follow the directions on the can. Whatever you’re doing or using, there will be directions and they’re critical if you want the finished job to look nice.

Address Molds

One of the most pernicious problems found in wood fences are the various strains of mold that can begin forming. However, a wood fence that has a very good stain on it will be very resistant to mold. Mold will not do as much damage as other intruders such as regular and real insects, though, but it can do it if you let it go long enough. The only way you can stop this from happening is with good staining and then taking quick action if you see it.

Fence Contractor

There are tons of cleaning products for wood on the market, and your fence contractor may have something to sell you. Contracting this out is possible, but it is generally not time-consuming. Bleach and water in a solution that is not too strong are recommended, and in this way you are sure to kill any mold formation. Keep in mind that this typically will not be required for the entire fence structure, and in this instance spot cleaning will be perfect and thus reducing the amount of time needed. On the other hand, you may be averse to the application of bleach and introduction to the environment which it surely will cause. Always record your fence maintenance activities, and the reason is you may one day have a need to know the history. And then also write down any corrective measures you took. You can take your experiences and then study them and look for areas of improvement.
